NOTES ON NEWS

Define “Broadcast Journalism” in 1-3 sentences.
Journalism is news stories, and reporting of currant events. Broadcasting is the airing instantly.



List and describe the six criteria of newsworthiness.

TITLE DESCRIPTION EXAMPLE
1Unusualness: News is the different, the unusual, the out of the ordinary. Why is the news always bad? Unusual is more often found in bad news. Ex: Airplane lands in river.

2.Significance: Important Events, ones that affect many people, are news.Ex:Taxes, Elections, War, Scientific discoveries, Economy, These are significant in peoples lives

3.Timeliness: Old news isnt news: its History. People want to hear about the flood while it's happening

4.Proximity: People want to know about Nearby events: Ex: Local school gang activity, New state tax law

5.Prominence: When well-known people, buildings, or places are involved, that is news.
Ex: If you are arrested for shoplifting, not news.

6.Human Interest: Stories about ordinary people or animals, humorous or dramatic. Ex: Heart-warming or Heart-wrenching stories.
